Sleep and Health

Good Sleep is a Must for a Healthy Lifestyle

Restful, refreshing sleep, along with good nutrition and exercise, is essential for you to feel your best and leads to a healthy lifestyle. Seven to eight hours of sleep a night is recommended, however, individual needs may vary from five to ten hours.

Sleep is vital in maintaining good health and well being. A good night’s sleep helps you to re-energize your body and prepare for the day ahead.

Lack of proper sleep can lead to a more stressful and less productive day. Getting a good night’s sleep will help you to perform better when you are awake.

Hints for a Better Night’s Sleep

Take the time to get a good night’s sleep – it can make all the difference in how you function the next day.

  1. You need a comfortable and supportive mattress and foundation.
  2. Try not to exercise within three hours of bedtime because the adrenaline released with exercising could keep you awake.
  3. Don’t eat a large or heavy meal, or foods that could cause indigestion or heartburn, within four or five hours of going to bed. Also avoid drinks that contain caffeine or alcohol which may cause disturbed and/or shallow sleep.
  4. A warm bath may help you relax and feel drowsy.
  5. Create a relaxing bedroom atmosphere associated with pleasure and rest – not stress and tension.
  6. Establish a routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day – even on weekends.
  7. Temperature of the environment plays a role in a good night’s sleep; 17 to 20 degrees Celsius is generally conducive to a restful sleep.
